Australia is a lucky country...
and it has been one of the best places to live in the world, at least before a global pandemic started in Wuhan, China, in late 2019.
Australia is one of the most advanced and the most progressive countries in the world - a relatively young nation and yet with over 40 000 years of history. Aboriginal Australians are the oldest continuous culture on Earth and this land is rich with natural resources as well. Australia, which is about 80% the size of the United States, is known for its large reserves of coal, iron ore, nickel, copper, rare earth metals, oil shale, and also has the largest gold reserves in the world.
Due to its natural richness, warm climate, political and finacial stability, almost constant skill shortages in many aspects of the constantly growing economy, as well as open and welcoming society, Australia is a perfect destination and a land of opportunity for migrants form all around the world.
Those born in England continue to be the largest group of overseas-born residents, accounting for 3.6% of Australia's total population, followed by people born in India (3.2%), China (2.5%), New Zealand (2.2%), Philippines (1.4%), Vietnam (1.1%), South Africa (0.8%), Malaysia (0.7%), Nepal (0.7%), and Italy (0.6%).
In 2023, there were over 8.2 million migrants living in Australia, that is 30.7% of the total population. The various waves of migrants from numerous countries over time have had a profound effect on Australia, and have made this country as great - and as culturally diverse - as it is today.
The median age of those born overseas has decreased over time, from 46 years in 2003 and 45 years in 2013 to 43 years in 2023.
Top countries of birth for overseas migrants in each of state and territory are: China in NSW, India in Vic & ACT, New Zealand in Qld, England in SA, WA & Tas, and Philippines in NT.
